{"id":1714,"date":"2013-07-06T23:07:03","date_gmt":"2013-07-07T03:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/essportscouncil.org\/liberty-games\/?p=1714"},"modified":"2013-07-09T04:42:09","modified_gmt":"2013-07-09T08:42:09","slug":"nothing-but-net","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/essportscouncil.org\/liberty-games\/post\/nothing-but-net\/","title":{"rendered":"Nothing But Net"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1715 alignleft\" title=\"jump\" src=\"http:\/\/essportscouncil.org\/liberty-games\/files\/2013\/07\/jump.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"533\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Basketball was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Constantia; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/library.thinkquest.org\/10615\/no-frames\/basketball\/james.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: small;\">James Naismith<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">Naismith introduced the game when we was an instructor at the <strong>Young Men&#8217;s Christian Association<\/strong> (YMCA)Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">At the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he organized a vigorous recreation suitable for indoor winter play.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">The game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer ball. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">Teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">By <strong>1897-1898<\/strong>, teams of five became standard. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">The game rapidly spread nationwide and to Canada and other parts of the world, played by both women and men; it also became a popular informal outdoor game. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">U.S. servicemen in World War II <strong>(1939-1945)<\/strong> popularized the sport in many other countries.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A number of U.S. colleges adopted the game between about <strong>1893<\/strong> and <strong>1895<\/strong>. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">In <strong>1934<\/strong> the first college games were staged in New York City&#8217;s Madison Square Garden, and college basketball began to attract heightened interest. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By the <strong>1950&#8217;s<\/strong> basketball had become a major college sport, thus paving the way for a growth of interest in professional basketball.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The first pro league, the <strong>National Basketball League<\/strong>, was formed in <strong>1898<\/strong> to protect players from exploitation and to promote a less rough game. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">This league only lasted five years before disbanding; its demise spawned a number of loosely organized leagues throughout the northeastern United States. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">One of the first and greatest pro teams was the Original <strong>Celtics<\/strong>, organized about <strong>1915<\/strong> in <strong>New York City<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They played as many as <strong>150<\/strong> games a season and dominated basketball until <strong>1936<\/strong>. The <strong>Harlem Globetrotters<\/strong>, founded in <strong>1927<\/strong>, a notable exhibition team, specializes in amusing court antics and expert ball handling.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In <strong>1949<\/strong> two subsequent professional leagues, the <strong>National Basketball League<\/strong> (formed in <strong>1937<\/strong>) and the <strong>Basketball Association of America (1946)<\/strong> merged to create the <strong>National Basketball Association<\/strong> (NBA). The <strong>Boston Celtics<\/strong>, led by their center Bill Russell, dominated the <strong>NBA<\/strong> from the late <strong>1950&#8217;s<\/strong> through the <strong>1960&#8217;s<\/strong>. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">By the <strong>1960&#8217;s<\/strong>, pro teams from coast to coast played before crowds of many millions annually. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">Wilt Chamberlain, a center for the <strong>Los Angeles Lakers<\/strong>, was another leading player during the era, and his battles with Russell were eagerly anticipated. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, also a center, came to prominence during the <strong>1970&#8217;s<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jabbar perfected his famed <strong>&#8220;sky hook&#8221;<\/strong> shot while playing for the <strong>Los Angeles Lakers<\/strong> and dominated the opposition.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The <strong>NBA<\/strong> suffered a drop in popularity during the late <strong>1970&#8217;s<\/strong>, but was resuscitated, principally through the growing popularity of its most prominent players. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">Larry Bird of the <strong>Boston Celtics<\/strong>, and Magic Johnson of the <strong>Los Angeles Lakers<\/strong> are credited with injecting excitement into the league in the <strong>1980&#8217;s<\/strong> through their superior skills and decade-long rivalry.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">During the late <strong>1980&#8217;s<\/strong> Michael Jordan of the <strong>Chicago Bulls<\/strong> rose to stardom and helped the <strong>Bulls<\/strong> dominate the <strong>NBA<\/strong> during the early <strong>1990&#8217;s<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A new generation of basketball stars, including Shaquille O&#8217;Neal of the <strong>Orlando Magic<\/strong> and Larry Johnson of the <strong>Charlotte Hornets<\/strong>, have sustained the <strong>NBA&#8217;s<\/strong> growth in popularity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In <strong>1959<\/strong> a <strong>Basketball Hall of Fame<\/strong> was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Constantia;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">Its rosters include the names of great players, coaches, referees, and people who have contributed significantly to the development of the game.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;
