On the penultimate day of this year\u2019s Liberty Games<\/strong>, the Track and Field competition drew to a close.\u00a0 The 5000m Race Walk<\/strong>, the longest event of the meet, took place in\u00a0hot (85\u00b0F), humid, and sunny conditions.\u00a0\u00a0With more than\u00a010<\/strong> Athletes\u00a0registered for the event, a full field of eight (8)\u00a0<\/strong>toed the starting line.\u00a0 Two (2)<\/strong> of the competitors, Miriam Ramon<\/strong> and her daughter Carolina<\/strong>, came all the way from Ecuador<\/strong> to be a part of this growing and exciting competion.\u00a0 Miriam, a 4x South American Champion<\/strong>, is making a comeback and setting a positive example for her two (2)<\/strong> teenage daughters.<\/p>\n

Also competing was 17 year
\nold Sagan Leggett<\/strong>, a 63<\/strong> second 400m<\/strong> runner who has been race walking less than a month!\u00a0 She will be travelling to Boston<\/strong> to attend the USA – Canada Juniors Meet<\/strong> in two (2)<\/strong>\u00a0weeks.\u00a0 The teenage brother and sister duo of Paul<\/strong> and Pricilla Capuano<\/strong> braved the heat and both medaled for their efforts, while\u00a018 year old Kem Bailey<\/strong> broke 30:00, despite the\u00a0conditions.<\/p>\n

The men\u2019s race was a clash between the USATF Race Walk Chairs\u00a0neighboring associations.\u00a0 In one of the closest finishes in recent history, Bill Vayo<\/strong> (Pictured Left<\/strong><\/em>) from USATF (NY) pipped Don Lawrence from USATF (Adirondack)\u00a0by 0.37<\/strong> seconds after a furious last lap sprint.\u00a0 Race Walking<\/strong> at the Liberty Games<\/strong> is certainly growing, particularly with scholastic talent.\u00a0\u00a0We look eagerly forward to even more competitors in 2014!<\/strong><\/p>\n
