{"id":574,"date":"2012-03-22T21:23:12","date_gmt":"2012-03-23T01:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/essportscouncil.org\/liberty-games\/?p=574"},"modified":"2012-03-23T21:18:35","modified_gmt":"2012-03-24T01:18:35","slug":"fencing-gets-to-the-point-an-art-with-weapons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/essportscouncil.org\/liberty-games\/post\/fencing-gets-to-the-point-an-art-with-weapons\/","title":{"rendered":"Fencing Gets To The Point &#8211; An Art With Weapons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/essportscouncil.org\/liberty-games\/post\/fencing-gets-to-the-point-an-art-with-weapons\/d%c2%a4d%c2%b5n%c2%85n%c2%82d%c2%bed%c2%b2dd%c2%bdd%c2%b8d%c2%b5-d%c2%9cd%c2%ben%c2%81dod%c2%bed%c2%b2n%c2%81dodn%c2%8f-n%c2%81dd%c2%b1dn%c2%8f-2012-d%c2%a2n%c2%80d%c2%b5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-610\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-610\" title=\"Olympian, Tim Morehouse\" src=\"http:\/\/essportscouncil.org\/liberty-games\/files\/2012\/03\/Morehouse1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"http:\/\/essportscouncil.org\/liberty-games\/files\/2012\/03\/Morehouse1.jpg 452w, http:\/\/essportscouncil.org\/liberty-games\/files\/2012\/03\/Morehouse1-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0When we first looked at the possibility of Fencing being a part of the Liberty \u00a0Games, I must admit that I was hesitant at first thought.\u00a0 Then I was told that there is a Sabre used, and immediately I thought, \u201cLight Sabre\u201d?\u00a0 My second thought was how to get Darth Vader, Han Solo, Princess Leah, Luke Skywalker, and Yoda together to make the official announcement, and oversee the event.\u00a0 As long as we could pull that off, then Fencing was definitely a \u201cGO\u201d!\u00a0 Okay, I was a little misled by the Light Sabre hanging on the wall alongside the Darth Vader like outfit.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t quite as cumbersome as the mask Vader wore, but it was every bit intriguing, which made me think, \u201cWho\u2019s behind that mask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Then I met Mark Dolata, who may have played Darth Vader in the Star Wars films.\u00a0 Thankfully, he was a very kind gentleman, and as long as we didn\u2019t fail him, he would keep us alive.\u00a0 So, per his request, we are on a mission to preach the Sport of Fencing to all who have ears, lest ours are cut off and we become Van Gogh look-a-likes.\u00a0 We have decided to share with you some of the basics of the Sport of Fencing here, and we hope you find it as exciting and intriguing as we did:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Fencing is not a widely publicized sport in mainstream media. You\u2019ll never hear ESPN touting the Super Bowl of fencing tournaments. \u00a0So why do I bring attention to this obscure sport that requires much of the same skill, both mental and physical, as other major sports?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cThe history of Fencing parallels the evolution of civilization, back from the days of ancient Egypt and Rome, to the barbaric Dark Ages, to the fast and elegant Renaissance, up to the modern, increasingly popular Fencing of today\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Fencing has always been regarded as more than a sport; it is an art form, an ancient symbol of power and glory, and a deeply personal, individual form of expression. \u00a0Fencing is and always has been an intrinsic part of life, from the\u00a0dueling\u00a0and battle of yore to the widely captivating movies and facets of popular culture such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0120746\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zorro<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0093779\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Princess Bride<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The earliest evidence of Fencing as a sport comes from a carving in Egypt, dating back to about 1200 B.C., which shows a sport fencing bout with masks, protective weapon tips, and judges.\u00a0 Today, there are three main styles of Fencing: Epee, Foil and Sabre. \u00a0All three are used in the Olympics and the main difference is the weight of the weapon and scoring. The player who scores more \u201chits\u201d wins. \u00a0In Foil, only hits to the torso are scored. \u00a0The entire body is in play for Epee, and Sabre scores points for hits that are above the waistline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The <strong><em>E<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>mpire <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>S<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>tate Sports Council<\/em><\/strong> is pleased to announce Fencing as an Official Sport of the 2012 Liberty Games!\u00a0 If you are interested, and wish to compete for the State Title, you may now <a title=\"Fencing Registration\" href=\"http:\/\/www.askfred.net\">Register online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Because the Liberty Games are built around the concept of T-E-A-M (Together Everyone Achieves More), we would like to make a spot in each of the articles written, that will announce the arrival of each Sport, to impress upon you the importance of each of the individual Sport\u2019s Chairs, as they are critical in the effort to Bring Back the Games!\u00a0 The Fencing Sport\u2019s Chair is Mark Dolata, and he is joined by Co Sport\u2019s Chairs Duncan and Christine Rounds, and their cooperation is very bit a TEAM effort.\u00a0 When asked about the Liberty Games becoming the New State Games Christine Rounds said, \u201cWe are excited that the State Games are back, and being held in the Capital Region this year.\u00a0 In addition, the Liberty Games is a great\u00a0event title\u2026and we Love the logo too!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The <strong><em>E<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>mpire <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>S<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>tate Sports Council<\/em><\/strong> is very excited to have Mark, Duncan, and Christine on our TEAM, and we hope you will enjoy taking part in the competition, which will begin on Saturday, July 21<sup>st<\/sup>.\u00a0 Moreover, we are so excited that we are
