\"Schenectady<\/a>SCHENECTADY\u00a0\u2014 Dodgeball is coming to the Schenectady Armory this spring as part of a statewide Corporate Challenge.<\/p>\n

The Empire State Sports Council <\/strong>(ES Sports), a Nonprofit 501(c)(3) Organization based in Clifton Park, is kicking off the first year of its newest Annual Event, the Empire State Corporate Challenge<\/strong>, with a Dodgeball Tournament<\/strong> at the Armory in April.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost corporate challenges across the nation are similar to the Workforce Challenge,\u201d<\/strong> said Anthony Mills, Executive Director of ES Sports<\/strong>. \u201cThere are only about four (4) true corporate challenges, which are similar to the one we\u2019re launching in 2016.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Empire State Corporate Challenge<\/strong> will include a series of sports events held in the Capital Region from April<\/strong> through July<\/strong>. \u00a0The Dodgeball Tournament<\/a><\/strong>, hosted by the Armory on April 15th and 16th<\/strong>, will kickoff the series of contested events.<\/p>\n

The goal of the Corporate Challenge<\/strong> is to get Businesses<\/strong>, Communities<\/strong>, and Families<\/strong> involved in an effort to combat obesity, while at the same time improving the relationships in each, Mills said.\u00a0 He noted, “That is why the Empire State Corporate Challenge is open to Employees, but also their Spouses, Children, and Grandchildren!\u00a0 Everyone’s points count for the Business they represent.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal of the Sports Council opened up the door for this,\u201d<\/strong> he said. \u201cOur mission statement is Health, Exercise, and Education.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Details of the various events over the 10<\/strong> to 12<\/strong> week Corporate Challenge<\/strong> will be announced during a Press Conference<\/strong> on Wednesday<\/strong>, February 10th<\/strong>, at 3:00 p.m<\/strong>. at the Armory, located at 125 Washington Ave.<\/p>\n

There will be about seven (7)<\/strong> different events including Track & Field, Basketball, Road Racing, Softball, and a Mud Run.\u00a0 The last event, which will be the Great Empire Walk<\/strong>, will take place on July 8th<\/strong> at Viaport Rotterdam<\/strong>, formerly the Rotterdam Square Mall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cDifferent events will happen on different weekends,\u201d<\/strong> Mills said. \u201cThat way people can participate in several of the contested events, if they want to. \u00a0On Thursday, July 14th, we will have Closing Ceremonies, which crosses over with the Opening Festival of the Sports Council\u2019s Liberty Games, now the new state games.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Empire State Sports Council<\/strong> hosts about half a dozen sports events\/programs each year, including the Liberty Tour Track & Field Serie<\/a>s<\/strong>, the Stars & Stripes 5k Twilight Run<\/a><\/strong>, Adirondack Adventure XC Series<\/a><\/strong>, Rising Stars Clinics<\/strong>, and the Country Mills Eagles Athletic Club<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara<\/strong>, D-Rotterdam, is coordinating the Dodgeball Tournament<\/strong> <\/a>at the Armory. \u00a0He said he anticipates the event to bring a lot of visitors to the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s nice about this event is we haven\u2019t had an event like it in Schenectady,\u201d<\/strong> he said. \u201cIt\u2019s about community participation and something anyone can play. I think we will have incredible community participation from businesses, schools, clubs, and other organizations.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Details of the Dodgeball Tournament<\/a><\/strong> will be outlined during the Press Conference<\/strong> on Wednesday<\/strong>, Santabarbara said.<\/p>\n

As part of the Press Conference<\/strong>, area mascots, including The Daily Gazette\u2019s Newsie<\/strong>, will go head-to-head in a special Dodgeball Tournament<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to figure out how it will work and also going through the rules,\u201d<\/strong> Santabarbara said. \u201cIt\u2019s a pretty interesting set of rules, like matching uniforms. There will be different age levels and anyone could play.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The event is open to all Corporate Employees<\/strong> and their Families<\/strong>. \u00a0Protective eyewear or other padding may be worn and athletic footwear is required.<\/p>\n

Teams should register prior to April 1st<\/strong> to participate in the event at:

There is a $60 Registration Fee<\/strong> for Youth and Scholastic Teams, and a $150 Registration Fee<\/strong> for Open and Masters Teams.<\/p>\n

There is a $3<\/strong> Event Fee for adult spectators, $1<\/strong> for students and FREE<\/strong> for children under 10<\/strong> years old.<\/p>\n

The Armory hosted Schenectady\u2019s first Mixed Martial Arts event in September, which drew more than 600<\/strong> people. \u00a0Santabarbara said he is hoping the Dodgeball Tournament<\/strong> will be as successful.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be a local and regional draw,\u201d<\/strong> he said. \u00a0\u201cThat means a lot of people, just like the MMA event brought a lot of people here. \u00a0You will see a very busy downtown and businesses will benefit.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
