The Constitution…It’s a Classic
With less than two weeks until the beginning of Summer, it felt more like the cool winds from September 17th, 1787 (the agreement by all of the States in the Union to the Constitution) with only a week before the beginning of Autumn! No hazy, hot or humid this year for the Constitution Classic! It was cloudy, cold and windy with temperatures below 60 degrees. That is more than a 30 degree drop in temperature from the Constitution Classic of 2005! But, do not be lured into thinking that these chilling temps would keep things from heating up at the latest version of the Classic. Perhaps it would suffice to say that like the Constitution, which has been amended several times, so were the records for the Constitution Classic!
Two of the records were amended by the performances of Alex Gaylord (above left) of the Country Mills Eagles and Hannah Sporn (above right) from Olympic Region Track Club in the 400m Intermediate Hurdles. In what would be a true team effort, Olympic Region (with their first appearance at the Empire State Liberty Tour) broke a few more records on the day. Josh LeBlanc set a new Young Mens 400m Dash record with a performance time of 54.22. Joining him in the 400m Dash was teammate Kyyla Kenyon as she set a new mark in the Youth Girls division with a time of 61.97.
Making his first appearance at the Constitution Classic was Scott Hannay, and he wasted no time getting into the record books by setting a new distance in the Open Mens Javelin with a throw 53.28m. And, once again Timathy Holzhauer brought smoke to the track with him as he broke his own record performance of the Empire State Liberty Tour Series in the 100m Dash for Intermediate Boys by .04 seconds as he was clocked at 12.35. His teammate from the Country Mills Eagles also broke the 200m Dash record for the Empire State Liberty Tour (Intermediate Boys) with a time of 25.22. Kelsey Hanson set a new Youth girls High Jump mark by clearing 1.52m this year, thus breaking her record jump last year at the Constitution Classic by .02m.
It’s been nearly 220 years since the time of the original Constitution in 1787, but the 2006 version has had just a few more amendments! “I’m not sure the forefathers would approve of so many amendments this quickly, but I am more than happy to see all of them, and in person!”, said Anthony Mills, Executive Producer of the Empire State Liberty Tour Track & Field Series. He adds, “I can’t wait until next week in Saratoga at the President’s Open! Perhaps we will have a ‘Featured Event’ and invite George, Abe, Ike and Teddy to participate.”
