“Weapons of WAR!”

Independence Invitational 2015

On June 28th, 1976, a draft of the Declaration of Independence was presented to Congress by Thomas Jefferson, and subsequently adopted on July 4th, 1776, although the parchment upon which the final copy was written was not signed until August 2nd, 1776, of which there were 55 men that signed the Declaration of Independence.  I am unsure as to whether any of these Men were Track & Field enthusiasts, but the ensuing war with the British featured a General of War named George Washington, who became the 1st President of these UNITED STATES!

In honor of the many battles that would take place over the next few years, several of which took place in the state of New York, the Empire State Sports Council would like to dedicate this article to the Weapons of War that have become Olympic Implements to Throw for Sport.  With pleasure, the Liberty Tour Track & Field Series makes each of these available at each event!

There are some VERY interesting stories behind each of these modern day Throws, and every implement does originate from a Weapon of War!  Some of them are rather intriguing, especially the Discus, which has been traced back to Indian Warriors.  There was some extensive research done to track each of these down, and this article would become a Track & Field history book if it was assembled to post all at one time, so they will become separate texts for another time.  Did you know that Henry VIII is said to have loved only one thing more than women?  You guessed it…he loved Sports.  Although Jousting was his favorite, he was known to throw the weights, and specifically the Hammer, Shot, and Javelin.

Unfortunately, we DO NOT have any Kings at the Liberty Tour Track & Field Series, but we have provided for you a collection of the Men and Women that enjoy playing around with the Weapons of War! Below, we captured some of them that took part in the Independence Invitational .  We hope you enjoy them, as much as we enjoyed being a part of the FUN and EXCITMENT on what was a beautiful evening for Track & Field!  Just scroll down further to view the Thumbnails.  Click the Thumbnail to view the entire photo with the caption.

Just a quick note to let you know that the Country Mills Eagles won their second straight meet scoring 187 points. Chatham Gold took 2nd Place with 158 points, Averill Park finished in 3rd Place with 122 points, and In A NY Minute took 4th Place with 61 points.

Liberty Sports Gear has partnered with the Empire State Sports Council (ES Sports) and is offering more than $1,000 in Gift Certificates, that can be used by the winning clubs for Equipment, Footwear, Team Uniforms, and more!  The Liberty Tour Track & Field Series is comprised of six (6) events, and the Liberty Games is next up on Saturday, July 18th, and will begin at 10:00 am. Be sure your Track & Field club makes it to this final stage, so that your Team is in the best position to earn one (1) of four (4) Team Prizes.  The top Prize is worth $500 of Liberty Sports Gear!
